Roller Derby & Charity

Posted on: January 22nd, 2011 by Erin Kieper

Most would have a hard time thinking roller derby and charity would fit in the same sentence but nothing is further from the truth when talking about the Rat City Roller Girls in Seattle. These women skate fast, sacrifice their bodies for the sport and also work with nonprofits to raise money and awareness. Last Saturday the Throttle Rockets partnered with Young Survival Coalition for the RCRG charity bout. The skaters wore pink t-shirts and raised $300 for  the local YSC affiliate. YSC also raised money at the information table where they raffled off the “Bust” of  the Throttle Rocket’s own Co-Captain, Sirius Mischief.  I have to believe many fans came away with a better understanding that breast cancer has no age boundaries and we can have fun talking about our breasts and keeping them healthy. Here are a few pictures from the night. I know I will return for another night of roller derby and cheer for the Throttle Rockets!

Carbon Leaf’s song which honors a young friend with breast cancer

Last week we went to ZooTunes in Seattle where Carbon Leaf was performing. They are one of my favorite bands and they played a beautiful song dedicated to a friend  diagnosed with breast cancer. I wanted to share this song for those who haven’t heard it. Enjoy!YouTube Preview Image
